Discover Ship Cove
There’s a reason Captain Cook spent more than 100 days here, visiting Ship Cove five times across three separate voyages. So why not discover it for yourself?
Join us on our Discover Ship Cove Cruise and experience one of the most significant and spectacular locations in Queen Charlotte Sound for yourself.
Few places in New Zealand carry as much history as Meretoto/Ship Cove, where Captain Cook first dropped anchor more than 250 years ago. Nestled in the outer reaches of Queen Charlotte Sound and accessible only by boat, this is a place where Māori heritage, colonial history, and natural beauty exist in equal measure.
You'll cruise through the stunning Queen Charlotte Sound with plenty of time to soak up the scenery and keep an eye out for dolphins, fur seals, and native seabirds along the way. We drop you at Ship Cove and return to pick you up at 10:45am before heading back to Picton, arriving at approximately 1:00pm.
While you're there, Meretoto/ Ship Cove has plenty to offer. You can explore the historic monuments and beautifully carved pouwhenua, walk the 30-minute bush track to a waterfall, take a few steps on the famous Queen Charlotte Track, or simply sit at the water's edge with a packed lunch and take in the view across to Motuara Island. Picnic tables and toilets are available on site.
We recommend wearing comfortable layers and sturdy footwear and bringing packed snacks to enjoy.
Optional Add-On
On the return journey to Picton, you have the option to stop off at either Furneaux Lodge or Punga Cove for a 1-course lunch, two of the Sounds' most beloved destinations.
